Lakeway Roofing Storm Damage: What to Do First and Where to Start
Lakeway roofing storm damage rarely looks the same from one house to the next. A hilltop home facing the lake takes wind that a house in a sheltered cul-de-sac never sees, and a tile roof fails differently from a metal one. This page is where we start every storm conversation: what to do first, how damage shows up on each type of roof, and which of our pages covers your situation.

How storms hit roofs around Lake Travis
Lakeway sits on hills above open water, and that shapes what storms do here. These are the four kinds of damage we see most.
Wind on exposed ridgelines
Homes on hilltops and lakefront lots catch wind with nothing to break it. Shingles lift at the edges and ridges first, and tiles at the rakes can loosen.
Hill Country hail
Spring storms build over the Hill Country and can drop hail on Lakeway before they reach Austin. Hail bruises shingles, cracks tile and dents metal, and much of it cannot be seen from the ground.
Rounds of heavy rain
Slow-moving fronts, like the one that arrived October 1, 2026, send rain through in waves. Valleys, flashing and low-slope sections such as patio covers are where it gets in.
Falling limbs
Live oaks and cedars overhang many Lakeway roofs. A heavy limb can puncture decking, and smaller branches can crack tile or scrape away granules without anyone noticing.
Roof Damage Repair From Storms in Lakeway, by Roof Type
Roof damage repair from storms depends more on what your roof is made of than on the storm. Many Lakeway homes have tile or metal, which need different repairs from the asphalt shingle most guides assume.
| Roof type | What storms usually do | What the repair involves |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingle | Lifted or torn tabs, creases from wind, bruising and granule loss from hail. | Replacing damaged shingles and resealing, or a full slope if damage is spread out. Matching older shingles can be hard. |
| Clay and concrete tile | Cracked or slipped tiles, broken ridge and hip pieces, debris in valleys. | Setting replacement tiles and checking the underlayment beneath, which is what actually keeps water out. |
| Metal | Dents, lifted seams, loose or backed-out fasteners, bent trim and flashing. | Re-fastening and resealing, replacing damaged panels or trim. Dents alone may be cosmetic. |
| Low-slope sections | Ponding, open seams and failed flashing on patio covers and flat additions. | Membrane and flashing repair, and sometimes correcting the slope so water drains. |
One caution for tile and metal: please do not walk on them to check. Tile cracks underfoot and metal is slick, especially when wet. Binoculars from the yard are safer, and a roofer can do the rest.
The first 72 hours after a storm
The order you do things in matters, both for your home and for any claim you might file later.
Make sure everyone is safe
Stay away from downed power lines and call 911 if one is sparking or across a road. Never drive through water over a road or low-water crossing.
Stop water from spreading inside
Move belongings, catch drips and keep people out from under a sagging ceiling. Keep receipts for anything you buy to protect the house.
Photograph from the ground
Take dated photos of the roof, gutters, downspouts, screens and the AC unit. Do not climb up to get them.
Get the roof covered if it is open
We can put a temporary covering in place so no more water gets in while a permanent repair is planned. On tile, that needs to be done without breaking more tiles.
Have it inspected once it is dry
An inspection tells you whether the damage is from the storm or from age, which is the question your insurer will ask.
Then decide on a claim
With a photo report in hand, you can make the call with the facts in front of you.
Storm damage and insurance
We document storm damage so you and your insurer are looking at the same evidence. Coverage decisions are between you and your carrier. Our Roof insurance claims in Lakeway guide explains the process step by step.
What we do
- Inspect and photograph the damage
- Give you a written photo report
- Write a scope of the repair work
- Meet your adjuster on site to show what we found
What we do not do
- Negotiate your claim, which is a licensed public adjuster's role in Texas
- Tell you what your policy will pay
- Touch your deductible in any way
Storm chasers and deductibles
After storms, out-of-town crews knock on doors around Lake Travis. In Texas, a contractor cannot pay, waive, rebate or absorb your insurance deductible. If someone offers to, it usually means an inflated invoice to your insurer, and the claim is in your name. Thank them and close the door.

Storm damage questions
How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
Look from the ground for missing or lifted shingles, cracked or slipped tiles, dents in gutters and vents, and debris on the roof. Inside, check ceilings and the attic for new stains. Much hail damage cannot be seen from the ground, which is why a free inspection is worth having after a significant storm.
Should I file an insurance claim before or after an inspection?
After. An inspection tells you whether there is storm damage worth claiming, or whether what you are seeing is age and wear. Filing without that information can leave a denied claim on your record.
Can you repair a tile roof without replacing it?
Usually, yes. Individual clay and concrete tiles can be replaced, and the underlayment beneath can be repaired in the affected area. A full replacement is only needed when the underlayment has failed across the roof.
Are dents on a metal roof covered by insurance?
It depends on your policy. Many Texas policies treat cosmetic dents differently from damage that lets water in. We can photograph and describe which is which, but your policy wording decides the coverage.
Can you handle my insurance claim for me?
No. We document the damage and can meet your adjuster to show what we found. Negotiating a claim is a licensed public adjuster's role in Texas, and coverage decisions are between you and your carrier.
